Synthetic minerals tetrahedrites and colusites for thermoelectric power generation
2021
Abstract Tetrahedrites and colusites are attractive materials for thermoelectric (TE) power generation using a heat source under 700 K. These materials, which mimic natural minerals, are composed of abundant and nontoxic elements, thus enabling large-scale and cost-effective TE applications without placing an undue burden on the environment. This chapter describes the progress in synthetic minerals research to enhance the TE performance and to elucidate the origin of superior TE properties. Specifically, the structural characteristics of tetrahedrites and colusites responsible for lowering the thermal conductivity are highlighted. Attempts to fabricate TE elements and power-generation modules are briefly described.
