Numerical Modeling and Very-Fast Transient Simulation of MOV Surge Arresters

2012
This paper describes a numerical model of very-fast transient characteristics for MOV surge arresters. The IEEE frequency-dependent model has been employed. Integro-differential equations involving KCL analysis are formulated. Trapezoidal rule is used for numerical integration in case of current flowing through the model inductance. The current of the model capacitance of the circuit is approximated by using Backward Euler's different formula. Non-linear characteristics of the MOV arrester is simplified by a technique of piece-wise linear interpolation. In this paper, the proposed numerical model has been evaluated in comparison with those of ATP/EMTP and MATLAB PSB surge arrester.
