EMTP is an acronym for Electromagnetic Transients Program. It is a software tool used by power systems engineers to analyse electromagnetic transients and associated insulation issues. EMTP is an acronym for Electromagnetic Transients Program. It is a software tool used by power systems engineers to analyse electromagnetic transients and associated insulation issues. EMTP originated in the habilitation (postdoctoral) thesis of Dr. Hermann Dommel in Germany in the mid 1960s, and has been improved by the cooperation of many power engineering professionals—an effort led by Dr. Dommel (currently with the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, B.C., Canada), and Dr. Scott Meyer (from the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.).
