International influences on agricultural pollution in the Netherlands

1993
Abstract This article examines the potential impact of expected policy changes in the EC on agricultural pollution in the Netherlands. Various relevant economic and agricultural developments are discussed and evaluated for their environmental implications. ‘The development of a single European market in 1992 is thought to have little impact on agricultural pollution in general. It might, however, frustrate Dutch plans to ban a number of hazardous pesticides. To support the 1992 process and also to aid GATT negotiations, the EC will have to solve its problem of agricultural surpluses. This creates an economic incentive to reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides/ha. These potential environmental benefits can only be realized when new policies are implemented to support a switch to low input farming. However, existing national environmental policies will probably have a much larger impact.
