Magnetostrictive bilayer sensors: a survey

2004
This paper concerns a new generation of bilayer materials as a basic element for multi-functional sensor families, consisting of a magnetostrictive layer (ML) and a non-magnetic counter-layer (CL). The mean permeability of this bilayer is strongly affected by bending or temperature changes, respectively. Thus it can be applied as a basic element for sensors of curvature, force, acceleration, temperature and thus it is (i) robust but can be activated at low-forces, (ii) free of wear, (iii) compact and light-weighted (mass up to 0.1 g), and (iv) very cheap.
