Growth and Magnetostriction of Oriented Polycrystalline Pr Tb Dy Fe

2001
Oriented polycrystalline materials of Pr Tb Dy Fe have been obtained by the Czochralski method with the cold crucible system under a purified-argon atmos- phere. Experiments were carried out over a wide range, and the conditions, including growth of 30-10 mm/hr and temperature gradient of 110-140 C/cm, have been optimized for oriented polycrystalline materials growth. The magnetostrictive properties of Pr Tb Dy Fe were found to be very sensitive to both the Pr stoichiometry and to the Tb/Dy ratio. The measurement results reveal that the oriented polycrystalline materials of Pr Tb Dy Fe possess large magnetostriction at room temperature. Index Terms—Czochralski method, Laves phase, magnetostric- tion, oriented polycrystalline, rare earth-iron compounds.
