How do I say 'without gluten' in Europe?

Visiting countries where English is not the national language can be quite daunting for the wary gluten free traveller. One tradition you will see frequently is for a menu to be displayed outside a restaurant. We are now finding this happening in Australia more often. Upon closer inspection, you may find gluten free options are identified on the menu with a GF symbol or, with any luck, you will find a separate menu altogether. In Europe, you may find the symbol changes to SG as explained below.
