Sound Speed Analysis In Sungai Merbok, Kedah

The investigation of sound speed in seawater is one of the major interest to physical oceanographer and marine scientist. The application of sound speed has become important in hydrographic surveying as the acoustic method has been widely applied for remote observations of seas and oceans and fisheries purposes. The sound speed profile is an important source of information required to retrieve ocean properties. In liquid case, the speed of sound in water is approximately 1500 ms−1. In the context of shallow water environment, the speed of sound in seawater is variable and depends on its temperature and salinity. In this study, the sound speed of certain location in Sungai Merbok, Kedah was investigated. The sound speed calculation was based on field observation of temperature, salinity and depth of Sungai Merbok. The collected data showed a variation of sound speed between 1523.3–1537.8 ms−1.
