Avalanche protection for components wide band gap

A method of protecting components wide bandgap during voltage transients, comprising the steps of: Disposing a clamping device parallel to a device with a wide band gap, so that reverse transition energy is absorbed by the clamping device; wherein said clamping device having a lower reverse breakdown voltage than the device with wider band gap; and wherein the clamping device maintains a breakdown voltage during an avalanche, which is lower than that of the component wide band gap; and wherein the clamping device has a higher forward voltage drop as the device with a wide band gap.
