GEOSAT: Applications for Large-Scale Ocean Observations

1987
GEOSAT, the Geodetic/Geophysical Satellite Program, provides a satellite system for obtaining geodetic and oceanographic data which will support Naval operations and plans. The satellite obtains detailed altimetry data over all ocean areas in order to provide a homogeneous gravitational field data base, locate general geophysical/geologic provinces where ship surveys will be required to provide more detailed data, and provide data to locate and define ocean thermal boundaries. By separating the oceanographic signals from the larger geodetic backgrounds, the satellite provides an all-weather, day and night capability to measure ocean surface wind speed, significant wave heights, sea ice edge, and ocean mesoscale features (fronts and eddies).
