Cyclicity in the late Pleistocene to Holocene spring and lacustrine deposits at Florisbad, Orange Free State

1991
In the spring and lacustrine sequences which have minimum thicknesses of 6 and 4 m respectively at Florisbad, seven sand, five silt, two clay, and one carbonate lithofacies are present. Some of the sand, silt, and clay facies are organic-rich representing accumulation of decayed organic matter together with clastic sediment in bogs and marshes. The other sand facies are interpreted as either fluvial, shoreline, or aeolian deposits extensively altered to mottled sediments by pedogenesis. The silt facies are interpreted as windblown or stream sediment which accumulated along a lake shoreline or lake bottom. Exposure of these sediments resulted in their alteration by pedogenesis. The clay facies, which contains freshwater gastropods, are interpreted as lake bottom deposits
