Intra-Spinal Transplantation Of Mesenchymal Stem Cell- Neural Progenitor (MSC-NP) In Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) (S52.001)

2014
OBJECTIVE:To evaluate safety of intraspinal transplantation of MSC-NP in patients with ALS and also to evaluate clinical response by determining ALS functional rating scale (ALS-FRS-R) and changing in the laboratory tests and imaging studies (MRI results BACKGROUND:ALS is a devastating incurable disease characterized by rapidly progressive weakness, muscle atrophy, fasciculations, spasticity, dysarthria, dysphagia, and dyspnea. Stem cell based therapies represent a new possible strategy for ALS treatment. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of intraspinal delivery of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in ALS patients. METHODS: This is an interventional open label study, that 10 ALS patients were enrolled wirh specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS and CONCLUSION:The preliminary results showed the MSCs are safe and the ALS-FRS-R will be changed in a stable condition.
