2D Joint Full Waveform Inversion of Elastic Surface and VSP Seismic Data in Time Domain

2011
Using surface seismic data for a full waveform tomography, only structures until a certain penetration depth determined by maximum acquisition offset and overburden velocities can be resolved well. For typical acquisitions in the North Sea, this is often above reservoir level. Improving the resolution of elastic parameters at reservoir level would help to more accurately interpret the reservoir. On the basis of 2D synthetic data it is demonstrated that a joint full waveform inversion of OBC and VSP data can enhance resolution of elastic parameters significantly at depths below 2 km compared to the inversion of surface data. It is also shown that the use of VSP/OBC data constrains the shear velocities and densities better than streamer data.
