Clinical observation of photodynamic therapy combined with Chailing Decoction for exudative age-related macular degeneration

OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy combined with Chailing Decoction for exudative age-related macular degeneration.METHODS Fifty-eight patients(58 eyes) with exudative agerelated macular degeneration treated in our hospital from January 2010 to January 2011 were randomly assigned into two groups.There are 29 eyes of 29 parents in the PDT group and 29 eyes of 29 parents in the traditional Chinese medicine combined with PDT group(PDT+TCM).Compared with the data of corrected visual acuity,leakage area of the choroidal neovascularization(CNV) and CNV thickness of the two groups at 3,6,and 12 months after treatment.RESULTS In each stage of review after the treatment,the corrected visual acuity between the two groups showed no significant difference(P 0.05).In each stage of review after the treatment,the CNV leakage area was significantly less in PDT+TCM group than the single PDT group(P0.05);the thickness of CNV complex of PDT+TCM group was reduced obviously than single PDT group(P0.05).CONCLUSIONS Photodynamic therapy combined with Chailing Decoction for exudative age-related macular degeneration was more effective than single photodynamic therapy.
