Outcomes of surgical and nonsurgical management of persistent fetal vasculature

2003
In a retrospective study of 54 eyes with persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), 34 eyes underwent pars plicata lensectomy and vitrectomy and 5 eyes has translimbal lensectomy and vitrectomy. Six of these eyes were inoperable. Fifteen eyes were managed nonsurgically. Measured outcomes were visual improvement and cosmetic acceptability. In 10 (30.3%) of 33 surgically treated eyes, vision improved. Statistically, no factor except sex and bilateral PFV (cosmetic unacceptability) could predict treatment results.
