The Emergence of Musical Possible Selves Through Musical Learning in the Home

2020
This chapter explores musicking in the home. We begin by considering the idea of parents and children as musical partners in the home, focusing on research concerned with musical parenting. We then turn to parental involvement in formal instrumental learning and parents as facilitators of home-schooling in music, considering the ways in which different types of parental support may be understood with the framework of facilitation modes proposed in Chap. 1. This is followed with a discussion of the emergence of ‘bedroom musicians’ who learn and participate in music within their own personal spaces within the home. Finally, we consider the idea that musical possible selves may have their foundation in music learning and participation in the home.
