Study on the opportunity of operation in intermittent exotropia

2008
Objective To investigate the operating opportunity of the intermittent exotropia, through the observation of perioperative change at different age and binocular vision functional status, Methods 56 cases were divided into 3 groups according to operation age .younger than 5 years old was named group A. 5-9 years old was named group B. older than 5 years old was named group C. Grouped again according to their fusion faculty and near or distance stereoacuity. To statistic and analysis the change of the position of eye and binoculus visual function at different age, and the change of the fusion faculty and near or distance stereoacuity before and after operation. Results The normal eye position rate at post-operation did not show significant difference:group A was 77.8 % ,group B was91.7 %;group C was 85.7%. The recovery rate of the binocular function show significant difference:group A was 88.9 %;group B was 87.5 %;group C was 50.0%. Conclu-sions The normal eye position rote at post-operation in group B surpassed group A. But The binocular func-tion in group A recovered better than group B. The recovery of distance stereopsis acuity were best in cases with near stereopsis lost but distance stereopsis keeping. The recovery of stereopsis after operation followed the distance stereopsis. The opportunity of operation of the intermittent exotropia should synthetically consider the age,eye position, fusion faculty and distance stereoacuity of the patients in many ways. Key words: intermittent exotropia; operating opportunity
