Synthesis and characterization of nanocomposite chitosan from Horseshoe Crab to improve antibacterial properties

2021
Surface modification and provide antibacterial properties for materials or devices in a variety of applications. In this study, polyurethane (PU) coating on medical devices from polyols castor oil and toluene diisocyanate using other materials and coating surfaces modified with chitosan (CH) which has antibacterial activity. CH in PU coating (PU-CH) applications is known to be more hydrophilic than pure PU. Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analysis showed that PU-CH has a higher nitrogen content and a rougher surface topography compared to pure PU. Modification of PU with CH significantly increases the antibacterial activity against Gram negative (E.Coli) and Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). It is known that E. coli bacteria which have a number of attached bacteria significantly decrease after CH is modified with PU.
