MODERNIZED SSR SYSTEM

1976
The secondary surveillance radar system (SSR), together with primary radar, has been widely employed as a sensor for air traffic control (ATC) according to the ICAO recommendations. For the past several years, ATC automation, involving SSR Mode-C data, has been promoted on a world-wide basis, and the importance of the SSR has been increasing year by year. From this point of view, the technical problems confronting the SSR and their solutions, such as sharp cutoff antenna, monopulse technique, improved SLS (side lobe suppression), beacon target processing, etc., and the standard SSR sensor involving the beacon target extractor applying some of these new techniques are discussed.
