Symptoms of Allergic Conjunctivitis-Reply

In Reply. —We appreciate the interesting comments by Dr Solomon about our article. He properly notes that itching and photophobia are extremely common signs in vernal conjunctivitis. He also states that he and his colleagues found eosinophils or eosinophil granules in 71.8% of his patients with vernal conjunctivitis. We studied a wide spectrum of patients with allergic conjunctivitis; only ten had vernal conjunctivitis. Thus, a history of photophobia was not as prevalent as in Dr Solomon's study of 124 patients. However, itching and eosinophils were prominent in both series of patients. Both seem to be good screening criteria for allergic conjunctivitis in all parts of the world. Since we do not have the opportunity to study such large numbers of patients with vernal conjunctivitis, we appreciate Dr Solomon sharing his interesting findings with us.
