1. E- and Z-conformations of 1,2-dehydro-3H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-ones are realized in the gas phase and in solution as the result of the inversion of the seven-membered ring. 2. The Z-conformers possess weak physiological activities or none at all. 3. The activities of the E-conformers depend on the ionization potentials of the unshared electron pairs of the nitrogen atoms of the seven-membered heterocycle by a logarithmic law.
