Cord blood has been used successfully as an alternative stem cell source to marrow, particularly in pediatric patients with hematopoietic malignancies, bone marrow failure, or inborn errors of metabolism, and currently expanding to adults. Cord blood was known since the 1930s to be useful as a substitute for peripheral blood in transfusions.
