Optical Magnetic Field Sensor with Fiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer and Galfenol Rod

2018
A fiber magnetic field sensor based on misaligned fusing single mode fiber and Galfenol rod is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The results show that a sensitivity of approximate 13.73pm/mT can be achieved. In addition, both the detection field strength and direction can be modified by introducing a bias DC magnetic field. Compared to the sensor constructed with Terfenol-D material, it has a better hysteresis and temperature performance. This sensor offers an alternative way to perform magnetic field sensing and to construct electrical current and position sensors, and therefore holds various potential applications in the fields of biomedicine and other relevant industries.
