Worshipers and community around Nurul Hasanah mosque in Dusun XI Sei Rotan, Percut Sei Tuan, Deli Serdang, which were located about 17 km from Medan have not familiar and got use to with the use of sanitizer for cleaning and sterilizing their hands and surroundings. Furthermore, they have not utilized their abundant natural resources, especially betel leaf and rice straw as raw materials for any useful products, in which extract of the betel leaf has functioned as antiseptics and sterilizer, whereas the rice straw may be processed to produce carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as moisturizing agent. In this works, extract of betel leaf has been produced using piper betel cultivated by surrounding community. Preparation of CMC based on rice straw from the surrounding rice fields as well as hand sanitizer based on betel leaf extract, CMC of rice straw, in 70% ethanol and 10% glycerol, were carried out in Polymer Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara, in Medan. Training and counselling on preparation and use of the natural hand sanitizer was carried out to worshipers and community around Nurul Hasanah on 26th July 2020, attended by more than 30 participants, the mosque caretakers, as well as public and local authority. In the training, presentations and talks have been given by 5 delegates of USU lecturers and demonstration on preparation of the sanitizer was performed by students, and 5 liters of the USU made natural hand sanitizer was donated to the mosque caretaker. It was suggested that community and worshipers in Nurul Hasanah mosque continuously implement cleaning and sterilizing protocols using their home made natural sanitizer.
