The status of compulsive buying and its association with depression among 2 238 postgraduates in Hefei

Objective To investigate the status of compulsive buying and its association with depression among first-year postgraduates in Hefei and provide the basis for the compulsive buying early screening and the targeted intervention measures on the educated individual.Methods With multistage sampling method,2 238 postgraduates were investigated by compulsive buying scales(CBS),self-rating depression scale(SDS) and a self-administered questionnaire in the class time during November 2010 to April 2011.Results The estimated prevalence of compulsive buying in the first-year postgraduates was 5.1%,the higher estimated prevalence were found in the group of lower mother's education,only children,urban postgraduates,ones with monthly allowances above 800 yuan.Multiple regression analysis showed that the monthly allowances may be the risk factor of the compulsive buying.Covariance analysis showed that the compulsive buying scale scores in the group of depression was significantly less than in the group of patients without depression.Conclusions The compulsive buying can't be neglected in educated individuals now,monthly allowances and depression may be influencing factors of compulsive buying.
