Preparation of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoro-2-chloroethane and pentafluoroethane

PURPOSE: To provide a method for preparing, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoro-2-chloroethane and pentafluoroethane, in high yield with a high selectivity. CONSTITUTION: This method, which consists of a vapor phase catalytic fluorination of at least one pentahaloethane represented by the formula C 2 HX 2-n F 3+n [X is a chlorine or bromine atom; (n) is 0 or 1] by hydrofluoric acid, is characterized in that a mixed catalyst is used wherein oxides, halides and/or oxyhalides of nickel and chrome are supported on a carrier consisting of aluminum fluoride or a mixture of aluminum fluoride and alumina.
