Persisting changes in the structure of the tympanic membrane.

Changes in the architecture of the pars tensa, mainly occuring as a result of acute and chronic middle ear disease or trauma are discussed. The pathogenesis and microscopical changes in tympanosclerosis and in atrophy of the tympanic membrane are reviewed.
