Development of New Sterically Hindered Amine for PCC

2017
Abstract A study to determine the relationships between the structure and the activity of the various amine-based CO 2 capture solvent was performed. We synthesized the sterically hindered amine (amine Y1) as the new absorbent with the modification of its chemical structure by an appropriate placement of the substituent. The evaluations of the amine Y1 in aqueous solutions were carried out based on their CO 2 absorption rate, absorption capacity and heat of reaction compared with that of 30% MEA (Monoethanolamine) solution chosen as the base case for all comparisons. From the CO 2 absorption and desorption experiment, 30% amine Y1 showed higher CO 2 cyclic capacity of 0.43 mol/mol compared with 0.06 mol/mol of 30% MEA. Besides, the absorbent Y1containing both amine Y1 and a promotor showed higher CO 2 capacity of 0.55 mol/mol compared with 0.35 mol/mol of 30% MEA. Furthermore, heat of reaction of the absorbent Y1 was smaller than that of 30% MEA. We found that the absorbent Y1 showed higher absorption capacity and lower heat of reaction compared with 30% MEA. Higher CO 2 absorption capacity and lower heat of reaction characteristics will reduce the regeneration energy cost of CO 2 during the stripping.
