Application of dead-reckoning in the single-base station location and tracking method

2007
ABSTRACT A location and tracking method utilizing Dead -Reckoning using single base station in cellular networks is proposed in this paper. Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the locat ion method utilizing the AOA an d the variance ratio of AOA are introduced to smooth the measurement error. The simulation result is illustrated to explain the location and tracking efficiency of the proposed method. INTRODUCTION Mobile location estimation in cellular networks has attracted mu ch interest over the past few years. The information of mobility including the mobile speed and moving direction will be of great help for efficient network resource management and in emergency situations, allowing real-time monitoring and position tracking. There are some fundamental location technologies using signal strength, angle of arrival (AOA), time of arrival (TOA), time difference of arrival (TDOA). These technologies need at least one assistant base station and one main base station to complete the location process. As a result, multi-base sta tions location methods require great resources, high cost and the synchronous of the base stations, which restricts the practical realization. The location technology using single base station needs comp aratively less equipment, lower cost and shorter response time. But the information gained by the single base station is less than the multi-base stations’, which adds to the difficulties on the development of the location technology using single base station. According to our research on the location methods, the mobility of the mobile station and the single-base station location method have not been explored enough in cellular networks. But Dead-Reckoning has been widely used in the vehicle navigation as an efficient technology. As a result, a location and tracking method using single base station based on Dead-Reckoning in cellular networks is proposed in this paper.
