Effect of heat treatment on magnetostriction and mechanical properties of 〈110〉 oriented TbDyFe alloy

2011
〈110〉 oriented TbDyFe giant magnetostrictive alloy was prepared by using the method of zonal melting directional solidification.Heat treatment for uniformization was conducted in tubular furnace for 2 h at different temperatures with protection of argon atmosphere. The effect of heat treatment on the preferred orientation, morphologies, magnetostriction and mechanical properties of TbDyFe alloy was investigated. It was shown by the result that the axially preferred orientation remained unchanged after annealing. The net-shaped rich rare-earth phase became spheroidal after annealing. The magnetostriction coefficient was improved the extent of 300×10-6 or so.Its mechanical properties was obviously improved, compressive strength became 256 MPa.The comprehensive performance of gant-magnetostrictive alloy of TbDyFe was the best when it was heat-treated at temperature 930 ℃ for 2 h.
