A single-layer dynamic monopulse radar for precise angle-of-arrival detection in short-range open space

2017
This paper presents a compact single-layer dynamic monopulse radar (DMR) with sigma-to-delta ratio weighted average algorithm to precisely detect the subject's angle of arrival (AoA) in a short-range open space. During the search mode, the radar continuously generates three pairs of sigma-delta beams, pointing toward different spatial angles in the FoV, by controlling the relative phase difference between two radar receive paths. When the target appears in the FoV, three signal-to-delta signal strength ratios are obtained and then the AoA is immediately determined by the weighted average algorithm. A single-layer printed-circuit-board DMR was implemented for demonstration. The measurement in an open space shows the mean error of AoA is 2.8° and the cumulative probability of 5.1° error angle is 90%.
