A QoE-oriented cross-layer resource allocation scheme for mobile service over Open Wireless Network

2014
This paper proposes a Quality of Experience (QoE)-oriented cross-layer resource allocation scheme for mobile service over Open Wireless Network (OWN). We adopt a mapping model between service rate and Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for BestEffort services. In addition, we adopt an efficient and low complexity algorithm calling Fast Structural SIMilarity (FSSIM), which can assess the quality of video with much better prediction performance than Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR). We map the FSSIM into MOS by using a mapping model. The cross-layer architecture presented in this paper jointly optimizes the Application (APP) layer, the Media Access Control (MAC) layer and the Physical (PHY) layer of the wireless protocol stack. On the basis of this architecture and the MOS of mobile services, we utilize the Binary Constrained Particle Swarm Optimization (B_CPSO) method to solve the cross-layer resource allocation problem. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the traditional scheduling scheme in terms of maximizing user-perceived quality as well as maintaining fairness among users.
