Irreversible end-stage organ failure represents one of the most important causes of death and the only curative solution is organ transplantation. The limitation of current therapies for ESRD have led researchers to explore new possibilities that could improve, replace or restore the renal function. The kidney is a complex organ containing multiple cell types and an intricate functional anatomy that renders it one of the most difficult to reconstruct.
