Expert System as a Tool for Continuing Education in Medicine

ABSTRACT The utility of an expert system in transfering experiential knowledge is studied. The MYCIN concept is extended to provide the explanation of the encycleopedic knowledge behind the diagnostic reasoning. It combines the case-study method with the explanation and reasoning facilities of expert systems. It also provides the diagnosis and explains problem-solving strategy of experts. An expert system can be more effective than the usual continuing education course because it facilitates learning-by-doing at the users' work-bench. Analysis of protocols collected during the use of such systems will be helpful in acquiring student-models in continuing education
