TITRIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF HAFNIUM IN ADDITION TO ZIRCONIUM

1962
A method for the determination of hafnium and zirconium together was perfected. It depends on the combination of the gravimetric with the titrimetric determination. This mehod, which adapted the conditions of the separation of hafnium from zirconium by countercurrent extraction with tributyl phosphate, is suitable in principle for all cases of the determination of Hf and Zr together. (If a definite mass of pure oxide mixture is present, it is sufficient to decompose them with hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids and to determine them titrimetrically. The gravimetric determination is unnecessary in this case). The method developed earlier for the titrimetric determination of Zr was used as the ioundation for the present method. The Hf and Zr could be determined with iimits of error of plus or minus 0.5% in the presence of each other. (tr-auth)
