Single event trigger in the focused microbeam of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro

1997
The problems which arise in developing microbeam apparata for ions of a few MeV with single event capability are outlined and the solutions adopted for the focused microbeam of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro are described. Possible single event triggers, suited for thin and thick samples, for light and heavy ions, are taken into account. We then pay special attention to scintillating plastic layers of a few dozens of microns, which look very promising as thick samples trigger. We evaluate the beam spatial straggling introduced by the layers with the aid of a simulation program, and propose optimal solutions for light guides and detectors. The challenging case of irradiation in air of cells in radiobiological experiments is considered.
