Coupling of the Indian, western North Pacific, and East Asian summer monsoons

2021
Abstract This chapter reviews inter-monsoon linkages among the Indian, western North Pacific, and East Asian summer monsoons. Particular attention is paid to teleconnection patterns that can induce such inter-monsoon coupling. The Pacific-Japan teleconnection pattern, which provides an overall anticorrelation between the western North Pacific and East Asian summer monsoons, also affects the Indian summer monsoon through westward phase propagation of tropical Rossby waves. The Indian summer monsoon can in turn affect East Asia through the Silk Road teleconnection pattern in midlatitudes. Those remotely induced monsoon anomalies have distinct subregional features. External drivers such as El Nino-Southern Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability can trigger those teleconnections and induce inter-monsoon coupling.
