Synthesis and Characterization of One Dimensional ZnS Nanorods

Zinc sulphide nano particles and rods have been synthesized by sol-gel method via ultrasonication using mercaptoethanol as the capping agent. The particle size varied from 19.2–30.4 nm. The diameter of the rods varied within 25–50 nm and their length varied within 50–100 nm. Structural and morphological characteristics of zinc sulphide have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscopic studies. X-ray diffraction pattern shows the development of well-crystallized form of zinc sulphide with the co-existence of both sphalerite and wurtzite phases. We used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to detect the surface species and the nature of surface chemical interactions. The thermal analysis data indicted three stages of weight losses with a total mass loss of 21%. The as-prepared 1D nano scale zinc sulphide rods may have potential applications in nano electronics and photonics.
