The commercialisation of transgenic crops : the Bt experience

1998
Crops protected against insect pests using transgenic technology based on Bt genes have been commercially available for 3 years. Already the crops have been grown on millions of hectares, have provided increased yields and improved, more targeted control of certain pests, and reduced insecticide usage in most cases. Several new approaches have accompanied the introduction of transgenic crops, such as Grower Agreements and Insect Resistance Management programmes. Practical experiences have shown that specific management is advantageous, in order to incorporate these pest species-specific crops into integrated crop management systems. This approach will help to maximise economic and environmental benefits.
