10 Gbit/s to 260000 subscribers using optical amplifier distribution network

1992
The distribution of 64 digital HDTV channels coded at 140 Mb/s to 262144 subscribers via standard single-mode fiber was experimentally demonstrated using cascaded laser-diode-pumped/Er-doped optical amplifiers and a high-speed multiquantum-well laser. A multigigabit time division multiplexing (TDM) approach with direct detection technology was used. The feasibility of digital TV distribution to several thousand subscribers by using optical amplifiers and a passive optical network was shown. No optical filters were used and optical isolators were used very sparsely to reduce the cost per subscriber. >
