The present invention relates to an ion exchanger (1) for treatment of water, particularly for softening the water, comprising a container (2), an inlet (3), an outlet (4), an ion exchanger material, in particular an ion exchange resin, and a bioactive substance which exhibits a germicidal effect within the ion exchanger, wherein the ion exchange material and the bioactive substance arranged in layers and are not vermengbar each other.
