Effect of solutes on the structure and energetics of a model solvent

2007
The effect of solutes on the energetics of the solvent and the propagation of structural effects through the solvent are studied in a model one-dimensional liquid solution. The molecular origins of the difference between inserting a solute molecule into the solvent at fixed volume and at fixed pressure are illuminated. The relation between the potential of mean force between solutes at infinite dilution and the correlation function in the pure solvent is illustrated in the model.
