Macular form of candidal chorioretinitis

2000
Two patients had Candida albicans chorioretinitis secondary to systemic candidiasis, and each received medical treatment. The first patient's chorioretinitis was severe and long-standing. A large subfoveal membrane developed in 1 eye after the infection resolved. In the other patient, a unilateral subfoveal lesion developed after 9 days of infection. Both patients lost visual acuity to the level of counting fingers. The development of a subretinal neovascular membrane in the foveal area is a rare complication of C. albicans chorioretinitis. The anatomy of the submacular choroidal vasculature may explain this severe form of candidal chorioretinitis.
