27Al MAS-NMR spectroscopy of glasses: new facilities by application of ‘SATRAS’

1992
Abstract 27 Al NMR of glasses has been shown to yield reliable results for structure determinations if high-speed magic angle spinning and satellite transition spectroscopy (SATRAS) are applied. True chemical shift values, quadrupole parameters and percentages of different building units can then be obtained. The new method takes advantage of the threefold gain in resolution of the first satellite transitions compared with the central transition utilized in conventional spectroscopy. The facilities are demonstrated for a fluoroaluminate glass, an alkali alumosilicate glass and two aluminium borate glasses containing either lead or bismuth. Aluminium was found to occur four-, five- and six-coordinated.
