An expert system for simulation and modeling of space motion sickness based on physiological data

1996
The objective of this study is the development of an expert system for modeling and simulation of space motion sickness' based on physiological mechanisms. Facts >> are composed of biological and electrophysiological data registered in microgravity during a parabolic flight. Its knowledge base is composed of qualitative and quantitative data extracted from scientific articles and documentation. The SADT analysis method proposed for the constitution of the knowledge base permits not only an overall view of nausea's physiological processes, but also a (fine) hierarchical and modular view. Modeling and analysis of electropysiological data have shown the importance of the mechanical response in the visceral mass to gravity variations. Analysis of biological data show their relation to the different phases of electrophysiological and neuro-humoral processes in space motion sickness. Detection methods of ruptures in electrophysiological signals are studied in order to favor the diminution of susceptibility to space motion sickness through biofeedback training, and for early detection of nausea when using extra-vehicular activity equipment.
