Microsurgical operation for treatment of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia : report of 51 cases

Objective To investigate the diagnosis,treatment,effect and timing on the craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.Methods Retrospective analysis of 51 cases in our department from February 2002 to June 2012 for craniofacial fibrous dysplasia patients who underwent fibrous dysplasia resection,treatment of optic canal decompression in 35 cases of open,prevention of 13 cases on optic nerve decompression.Results 51 patients were followed up for 1-8 years,an average of 5.2 years,the treatment of optic nerve decompression efficiency is 88% (31/35),prevention of decompression of optic nerve visual acuity was stable in the preoperative level,without loss of visual acuity and obvious injury.The effects of the patients were significantly changed.Conclusions The patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia associated with acute visual loss are suggested to underwent an immediate operation; ophthalmic artery B-mode uhrasonography can effectively evaluate prognosis after the surgery; prevention of optic nerve decompression can obtain satisfactory clinical effect.
