Breeding of rice maintainer lines with wide compatibility by molecular marker-assisted selection.

2015
【Objective】The present research was conducted to breed rice maintain lines with wide compatibility in order to provide references for the utilization of indica-japonica hybrid heterosis. 【Method】The 24 rice sister lines were crossed with 4 sterile lines viz., Bo A, Tian A, Qing A, and 62 A to determine their restorative or maintenance. SSR marker GXR6 of 187R(a wide compatibility variety) was used for detecting the compatibility gene S5 nof 24 sister lines. The compatibility of 24 sister lines were validated by indica-japonica testing by using Gui B, Nipponbare and Ballila.【Result】Excepting B11, B13, B14 and B15,the other 20 sister lines presented 100% sterility of pollen, and could maintain sterility to Bo A, Tian A, Qing A, and 62 A. The results of SSR detection showed that, B1,B2,B4-B7,B10-B12,B14-B16,B18-B20,B22 and B23 had the wild compatibility gene S5 n, but cross testing results validated that only B1,B4 were of compatibility; B9 also had compatibility even if was without gene S5 n. The seed setting rates of B1,B4 and B9 test-crossing combinations with Nipponbare and Ballila were significantly higher than those of Gui B test-crossing combinations while were lower than those of the testing varieties(Gui B, Nipponbare and Ballila). B1,B4 and B9 were rice maintainer lines with mid-compatibility. 【Conclusion 】B1,B4 and B9 are the maintainer lines with wide compatibility, which could be used for improving corresponding sterile lines, and giving full play to indica-japonica subspecies heterosis to enhance hybrid yield, it will has better application prospect.
