An Ultra-Wideband radar concept for the detection of buried victims beneath building rubble

2009
The deployment of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radars could dramatically improve the efficiency of rescue teams after a building collapse. UWB radars would provide a reliable and fast localization of alive victims buried under thick layers of rubble. This paper introduces a concept of UWB radar for the detection of buried victims beneath building rubble. After a theoretical approach dealing with the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the rubble, the UWB radar architecture and concept are introduced. First experimental results are finally presented.
