Barbiturate treatment of neonatal icterus

The influence of phenobarbital therapy on bilirubin levels of premature children was studied. Newborn prematures were randomly assigned to the treated (n=38) or the control group (n=44). Low doses of phenobarbital were given daily for the first 5 days and bilirubin levels and liver synthesized blood-clotting factors measured in both groups.
