The article attempts to consider populism as a political and cultural phenomenon of modern world politics. Modern political and cultural codes that determine the «rating» of populist politicians in the realities of modern politics are characterized. The author focuses attention on «democratic erosions», which significantly change the relief of the global political landscape of the 21st century, which arose as a result of the «aggressive expansion» of modern populist forces (movements, parties, leaders).  In times of globalization challenges of the twentieth century, populist politicians manipulate public consciousness using «socially sensitive topics»  –  poverty, unemployment, terrorism, war, migrants and others.  We affirm that modern populism is a logical and unbreakable element of the recording of global politics in the conditions of the «renewed world». The task of modern scientists must explore the nature, determinants, characteristics and risks of modern populism. Populism is a test of democracy for modern states, the only thing that remains open is how to cope with this challenge with Ukraine, which is in a state of democratic transformation. Key words: populism, political and cultural phenomenon, political and cultural codes, democracy, «erosion of democracy».
